MANCA JUVAN, born 1981 in Slovenia, has worked as a freelance photographer since 2000, after completing her studies at the Slovene School for Photography (1996 - 2000). She has published photographs and stories on Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal, Cambodia, Thailand, India, the United States, Serbia and the EU countries. Her work has appeared among others in The Times, The Sunday Times, The European Voice, Der Standard, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, National Geographic (Slovenia), Chicago Tribune. She was selected Photographer of the Year in Slovenia for her reportage work in 2006. She was twice commended - in 2005 and 2006 - for her work on Afghanistan by a Slovenian Association of Journalists.
In November 2006, five years had passed since American lead coalition forces removed the radical Taliban regime from power in Afghanistan. Thus the war against terrorism began, followed by liberalization and democratization process of the country. Women's issues have been one of top priorities in rebuilding this conservative and male oriented society, where tradition plays a strong role. What has changed in lives of Afghan women so far?
